❰ it's the second time adalia has shown up at thranduil's office door, but this time she doesn't bother to knock. iorveth has suggested she speak to thranduil in person, and adalia can see the merit of that, but she's still nursing some bruised pride, so she's not as willing to be polite as she may otherwise be. ❱

Provost. Iorveth suggested I come speak with you.

❰ with the Significant Eyebrows that suggest it's a matter of importance, and a motion toward closing the door behind her, so they may speak in private. ❱

Did he, [ thranduil says, and beckons her in. ] Close the door.

[ because those eyebrows clearly mean that this isn't something to be overheard. ]

He intimated you have a plan for dealing with the phylactery question. If that's true, I'd like to help enact it however I can.

[ he did like cassandra. she knew the rifters well; she had to have, on some level, expected a response this vitriolic. how long thranduil can keep the anger banked is another question. ]

❰ it is so very tiring to have to keep pressing everyone multiple times for straight answers — iorveth, petrana, thranduil, none of them will just speak plainly about what needs be done and by whom and when.

treat it as an exercise in building patience, adalia. ❱

[ patiently: ] A request for guidance; what their stance is on the matter.

[ he isn't free to act as he would like. what he does quietly is just that and entirely because he is aware what effect it would have on the inquisition's reputation. he is an elf when it suits for others to think him so and less when it is convenient for them to think him as a rifter first, but how he measures his own loyalties has been consistent from the start. ]

Perhaps in a few days. Until then, we wait.

❰ cool she knows nothing more than she did when she came in here and now she's the asshole who just wasted the provost's time. great, awesome, exactly what she wanted. adalia stands quietly, appearing to be just taking in that information, and then she inclines her head and squares her shoulders. ❱

I understand. I'm sorry to have wasted your time, Provost, I was under the impression there was something more actionable afoot.

This was not a waste, [ he corrects, in that same, even tone. ] Better that you receive comfort and confirmation in person than think yourself adrift.

[ there are plans afoot. he is reliable enough on that front. but adalia has not wound herself into his life as much as iorveth, or galadriel, for him to risk speaking of these things. what he knows of her heart- the companion she keeps- has not allowed trust to blossom. ]

Right now, action is inadvisable. The Inquisition leadership is not our enemy, we cannot act as though they are.

❰ i am adrift, adalia thinks, with less despair than fury. if iorveth has reason to think something is happening and tells her to seek thranduil out, something is happening. whatever it is, she'd bet on thranduil being at the heart of it, and even though she hasn't done anything wrong she's being shut out. no matter how she wants to help, or how useful she could be, none of that matters, because...

who knows. the workings of thranduil's mind are as much a mystery to adalia as anyone else's, and he's barely worth the time it'd take to figure them out. that's that, then. ❱
