[ Beleth, oblivious to any Gwens or other people listening in to their conversation, muses on Thranduil's instructions. Does it have to be a man specifically, she wonders, going over the list of scouts available to her. Would a human woman work? But that sounds dumb to say, so she doesn't. She'll figure it out. ]
I understand, Thranduil. I'll be careful. I--I won't let any threats hurt the Inquisition.
Or you.
[ Her voice grows a little stronger at that, and she gives a decisive nod. ]
[ his mood breaks with a huff of laughter- she knows him well enough to imagine his expression, that wry amusement writ behind some measure of stoicism. but he is in hightown behind closed doors, and gwen knows his mind and beleth ought to have been able to kindle to it by now. ]
Elbereth's stars, Beleth, no. I do not give a whit for the Inquisition. Keep yourself and yours safe, tell me what you find. Chiefest among my worries is that he sees, perhaps, someone strike an elf, and reacts accordingly. Who would the shemlen blame?
[ he plays the long game. the slow game. maedhros and his friend having no context to put thedas in perspective could lead to ruin. ]
You needn't protect me, little one. I will speak with him when he comes here, see if we cannot reach an accord. Though we were not allies in Arda, we may yet come to an agreement here. But I must know how best to approach him, and for that I will need to know the state he is in.
[ She offers her own huff of annoyance in return, because she can picture his current expression perfectly well, and it is not one that's taking her seriously. ]
I...suppose you're right. No--You are right, Thranduil. I'll be careful, and see what I can learn.
I hope that you can work things out with them. He...seemed nice enough. He was sympathetic, when I told him about how the elves here are...less, now. And he said I had a brave heart.
[ Beleth likes to believe she's cautious but that doesn't always stick around when people start giving her compliments and positive attention. It's almost like she has a self-esteem issue. ]
...By the way. Out of curiosity, are there any deep water monsters within Middle Earth, that you're aware of? Ones that are incomprehensibly enormous, beyond mortal reckoning, and what not.
I will have you whole and hale, Beleth Ashara. I would be loathe to need to tell your mother that you had injured yourself on advice from me.
[ he doesn't have a fear of her, but who want to tell a parent that something happened to their child because of your incompetence or failure to strike fear into their heart? ]
I'm sure my mother would understand that it would be my own fault--Ah. Well.
[ Polite throat clearing. ]
I didn't want to worry you. [ But attempting to distract him with news of more Middle Earth elves didn't go very well. ] There's just this...beast, that has been stopping us from being able to get off the island. We've got a plan, though! Which is coming together quite well.
It's just that--I've never even heard of anything like it before. I was hoping that you might have some knowledge of something similar. Your lore doesn't seem quite so...ah. Lost to time.
I am sure of your capabilities, and equally confident your plan will succeed.
There are many creatures that made their home in Middle-earth, often born or nurtured by the hand of the Enemy. I am afraid I cannot offer you much aid. I fought in a war where I witnessed a great many of these creatures, but I was young and felled early on in the battle. I spent the remainder of the war healing.

I'll see you soon, Thranduil. And I'll remember what you've told me.
